Picture

Megan Copenhaver, Editor-in-Chief

Megan is a senior Creative Writing major with a General Business minor from Cincinnati, Ohio. Her favorite form of writing is fiction, particularly the short story, although she hopes to publish a novel someday. She has been on the staff of Happy Captive Magazine for 3 years and has already seen so much growth and can’t wait to see more during her time as Editor-in-Chief! When she’s not reading or writing, she enjoys binge watching Survivor, singing in the shower, and scrolling through TikTok. After Miami, Megan hopes to become an editor where she gets to read and write all day long and get paid for it.

Elli Carder, Marketing Director

Elli is a Junior creative and professional writing major from Hamilton, Ohio. Aside from reading and writing, she enjoys watching period pieces, attempting to crochet, thrifting, and scrolling through Pinterest. She mostly likes to write longer fiction pieces in the genre of fantasy, but every now and then she’ll pretend she’s good at poetry. When she’s not on campus or sitting in a corner typing, you can find her working at the record store in her hometown. After Miami, Elli hopes to one day publish the kind of books that made her ugly-sob in her room at 3 am and to help others do the same.

This is her second year on the Happy Captive staff and her first year as a fiction and poetry writer. She is also the secretary of College Democrats and the former publicity chair of F.W.O.R.D. In her free time, Liz enjoys reading and writing fiction (specifically young adult and new adult romance), practicing yoga, creating an abundance of spotify playlists, and watching films. Ideally, Liz hopes to eventually end up somewhere in New York City with a job as a writer or an editor (or both) in the publishing industry.

Julia Hastings, Fiction & Poetry Editor

Julia is a senior English literature and professional writing double major from Huron, OH. On a given day, she can be found wandering around outside, petting her cat, eating chips and queso, rewatching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, drawing in her sketchbook, and pondering existence. When she is not off in her own world, she can be found on campus in the English honors fraternity, Sigma Tau Delta, and social sorority, Alpha Xi Delta. This is her second year on the Happy Captive staff and first year as fiction and poetry editor. Julia loves to read and write sci fi, fantasy, and YA fiction. She hopes to someday live near the ocean, travel the world, and have a job that she loves (job TBD).

Mady Wilson, Design & Layout Manager

Mady is a fourth-year English Literature and Professional Writing major with a Social Justice Studies minor from Zanesville, Ohio. Her favorite form of writing is literary and cultural analysis. She is an amateur artist, a professional procrastinator, and a sass master. When she’s not furiously typing away on her computer you can find her making crafts from Pinterest or in a coffee shop drinking an iced caramel latte. She is torn between being a grant writer or an editor as a career after graduation. In addition to being a HCM reader and Design Leader, Mady is a writing consultant at Howe Writing Center in King Library.

Her favorite writing style is something witty and nostalgic with an artful pining. Currently, she wants to pursue linguistic research, translation and cross-cultural communication, or education. She loves to read, write, watch Lucy Liu’s filmography, learn new things and spend time with loved ones.

When Kat is not playing her trombone in the Miami University Marching Band, she is either working in a research lab or reading science fiction novels. In her free time, Kat enjoys watching cartoons and dreaming of potential travel destinations (unfortunately, she has yet to find someone who can take her to Jump City). This is Kat’s second year being on the Happy Captive Magazine staff and her first year being the magazine’s Business Manager. Eventually, Kat needs to decide on her career, but her current plans are to find a way to mix her passions of reading and the human mind by conducting research.
