Caroline FunkCaroline is a junior English Literature/Creative Writing major and philosophy minor from Akron, Ohio. When she is not writing essays or analyzing readings for class, you can find her writing her favorite style of fictional short stories, reading fantasy books, and religiously drinking coffee. She aspires to travel as much as possible and study English in grad school to become an English professor. In addition to her third year as a member of Happy Captive, Caroline is also a member of the English honors fraternity, Sigma Tau Delta, and the social sorority Alpha Delta Pi.

Maddy EvansMaddy is a sophomore Integrated English Education and Creative Writing major from Canton, Ohio. She can often be found reading all forms of literature, writing short stories and poems, watching long YouTube videos on obscure topics, consuming a caffeinated beverage, or searching for her next thrift-store find. Along with being a first-year reader for Happy Captive, she is also the parliamentarian for Theta Nu Xi interest group Cosmic Flash. Her favorite writing often has strong emotions, dry humor, female protagonists, or all of the above. She hopes to be a high-school English teacher and hopefully travel the world, too.

Sarah PrusaSarah is a freshman English Literature major from Indianapolis, Indiana. Recently, she has fallen down the rabbit hole of mystery novels, with a particular love for Agatha Christie. However, she also enjoys fantasy, sci-fi, supernatural, and any manner of YA books. When she is not reading novels for class or working through her never-ending To Be Read list, she can be found walking around campus, scrolling through TikTok, or bingeing something new on Netflix. Aside from her first year on the Happy Captive staff, she is also a member of Archery Club and Claws with a Cause. She dreams of traveling the world and working in the publishing industry (perhaps abroad).

Sydney BellSydney is a freshman Creative Writing major from South Charleston, Ohio. Aside from her first year on Happy Captive staff, she is also a part of the Department of Magical Appreciation. When she is not reading and writing, she likes crocheting, thrift shopping, and enjoying time with family and friends, whether that’s taking walks, watching movies, or grabbing a cup of coffee. Sydney has always had a love for reading contemporary YA fiction but is growing to like YA fantasy, too. She hopes to pursue a career as an editor at a publishing company and one day publish stories of her own.

Allison HuffmanAllison is a sophomore Professional Writing major with a Spanish minor from Cincinnati Ohio. This is her first year as a reader for the Happy Captive staff, and she is also involved in EcoReps and the Honors student advisory board on campus. Her favorite forms of writing include dark, emotional novels with interesting characters, science fiction stories, or anything set in another world. When not reading, she enjoys drinking tea, listening to old music, and exploring nature. After graduation, she hopes to find a job in publishing or teach English somewhere abroad.

Max DallingaMax is a senior English Literature major with an Environmental Science co-major and a Music Composition minor from Cleveland, Ohio. He enjoys writing creative fiction and poetry, listening/playing music, watching movies, and spending time with friends. He is currently working on a literary fiction novel, and hopes to become an author and fiction editor. He loves anything dreamlike and hopes to evoke his own sense of this within his creative work.

Maria FlemingMaria is a senior Creative Writing, Psychology, and Social Work major from Cleveland, Ohio. This is her first year as a reader for Happy Captive Magazine and is also involved with Active Minds, Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Spectrum, and the Association of Creative Writers. When she is not writing essays and reading for class, you can find her drinking way too much coffee, reading a YA romance novel, or writing creative fiction or nonfiction. She plans on going to graduate school for creative writing to be a professor, as well as plans to go back and get her masters in counseling to be a therapist. In the meantime, she will be spending way too much time in Starbucks, waiting for inspiration to strike.

Julia MooreJulia is a freshman Creative Writing major from Massillon, Ohio (near Akron). This is her first year as a reader for Happy Captive Magazine. She enjoys reading and writing, crocheting, playing some video games, spending time with friends, and of course listening to Taylor Swift. Her favorite style of writing is YA fiction. She would eventually like to write books for teens and young adults.

Julia HolzlJulia is a Sophomore Strategic Communication and Professional Writing double major from the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. When she isn’t reading a book, you can find her listening to Taylor Swift and drinking an absurd amount of iced coffee. Aside from first year with Happy Captive Magazine, she is a member of the Miami University Student Foundation, and social sorority Chi Omega. Her favorite genres are creative fiction and poetry. Julia hopes to become a writer for a non-profit or an editor.

Melanie HamonMelanie is a sophomore Creative Writing major with a minor in Cello Performance. When she’s not reading, writing, or practicing, Melanie spends her time re-watching “Scrubs” or riding horses at the Miami stables. Her favorite style of writing is the short story; she is excited about anything that takes advantage of an artistic opportunity by pushing the boundaries of writing. When she graduates Melanie can see herself making a living as a novelist or as an editor in the publishing industry.
Lorelyn is a junior with a double major in Creative Writing and Professional Writing. She hopes to have a career as a freelance novel editor, and also wants to write her own political essays and fiction on the side. She prefers books with unique voices that stretch the definitions of genre while having a basis in science fiction, fantasy, or horror. She loves cats, baking, art, and architecture, and wants to live in various countries all over the world.

Abbey is a sophomore creative writing major from Bexley, Ohio. After finishing her most recent read you can find her drafting new pieces of writing or out golfing with her friends. She is drawn to writing that blends reality and fiction in a seamless way. She is a Happy Captive reader and hopes to join more organizations on campus. During her time at Miami she hopes to develop her own unique writing style that stands out from what she normally reads.
